I can’t remember when was the last time I watched the National Day Parade on television. Probably 20 years ago or so.
I have no idea why but I am just not excited or interested in the contingent marching, the performances, the singing, the planes flypast, the fireworks. It isn’t because I am not proud to be a Singaporean. I am, warts and all.
I participated in the National Day Parade, held at the National Stadium, when I was 13 years old. It wasn’t exactly fun. The waiting, the weekend rehearsals, the weekday rehearsals, the fatigue, the bad food. That one experience is enough to make me not want to watch the NDP for a very long time. Insipid as it may sound.
