In Japanese, ‘hana‘ means ‘flower’ and ‘mi‘ means ‘see’.

So ‘hanami‘ literally means ‘flower viewing’.

Which is what the Japanese do in springtime during the cherry blossom season.  Picnic in the cherry blossom parks, with crates of beer and piles of food, and make merry all day long.

We opened the windows this morning and were greeted by our local version of hanami.  The rows of trees planted outside our flat are flowering, and the branches are now laden with lovely pink and white blooms.

As pretty as a picture.
